Training takes consists of a number of both classroom and practical hands-on training including taking part in realistic scenarios covering a number of subjects including;

  • Mental Health

  • Land Based Rescue

  • Radio Communications

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Observation Skills

  • First Aid, including CPR and Defib

  • Knots and rope work

  • Boat Safety

  • Land-based search techniques

What we are looking for

Before you join the team, we think it’s important to realise how much of a commitment it will be – not just from you, but also your families.

First thing first – we are a charity, and all prospective members are expected to contribute towards the fundraising for the charity. We don’t get any money from the government, and we need to raise the £21000 a year it costs to run the team by doing sponsored events, grant writing, talks, collections and appeals. No fundraising = no team.

Lives can be at stake and so we need people we can rely on, we're only as strong as our weakest link so you must be able to work as a team and communicate well.  We are looking for caring and compassionate people who are be willing to work outdoors in all weathers at various times of day and night.

We welcome applications from a range of backgrounds all we ask is that you are over the age of 18, enthusiastic and willing to learn. Have a reasonable level of personal fitness and can pass an enhanced DBS check

Our operational team members make a difference to there local community by providing safety patrols around Yorks Rivers during weekend evenings and peak times as well as responding to call-outs from the emergency services.

The Role

As part of our operations team, you will help provide safety patrols along York's rivers on Friday and Saturday nights as well as other peak times such as bank holidays and race days.

Initially training as a foot patrol team member, you will provide the eyes and the ears of the team. 

Trained in a number of skills you could find your self providing first aid to members of the public, helping someone who is distressed, searching for a missing person or rescuing someone from the water.

Members will also assist with delivering water safety presentations to schools and other groups as well as assisting the fundraising team at events.

We provide all the training and no experience is required. This is an active role in a busy search and rescue team and all applicants should have a reasonable level of fitness.

All applicants must be aged 18 or over

Operational roles may be subject to enhanced DBS checks
